Music Theory and AP Music Theory
The primary educational goal of the Music Theory class is to develop an a deep understanding of written musical notation, harmony, composition, arranging, and aural skills. Students enrolling in this class should have a basic understanding of how to read written musical notation. Throughout the course of a full year, students will analyze, listen, and sing to gain a better understanding and appreciation of all musical genres. Long term projects include composing melodies, composing chorales, arranging melodies for chamber and concert ensembles, pop music analysis, and more. Many of the music theory composition projects will be performed by members of the Wind Ensemble or Mixed Choir.
It is recommended that students successfully complete a year of Music Theory before enrolling in the AP Music Theory course. AP Music Theory follows a similar course track as the Music Theory class, but includes an additional advanced AP curriculum and semester long final project. Only the serious music student should enroll in this upper level music course. AP Music Theory students will spend the year preparing for the AP Test which is typically administered in May of each year. Students who pass the AP Music Theory test can earn college credit hours, and will be prepared to successfully test out of beginning level Music Theory courses in college.
